Weekly Update

Hello 3rd Grade Families!

Three days until December break! Woo Hoo! These 3 days will be full of holiday fun. We will not be learning any new content this week or have any assessments! We will play a lot of review games and have fun with some holiday stories.

There will be NO HOMEWORK this week!

I will be stapling the December break reading challenge sheet in your child's agenda. I would love to have 100% class participation in the challenge during the break!

Mrs. Levi and I gave the class their presents from us on Friday. Each student received a candy cane and a gift certificate for a brand new book of their choosing! We have the certificates here so that they don't get lost. We will help them choose their book and they will receive them in January once the order comes in.

Our holiday party is Tuesday afternoon at 1:00. If you did not receive an email from Kat's mom about helping with supplies or volunteering, let me know and I can get the information to you.

For the last three days, our school is having the following dress-up days:

Monday: sparkly holiday outfits
Tuesday: holiday footwear (socks)
Wednesday: PAJAMA DAY (please, no nightgowns)

This week should be so fun! As always, let Mrs. Levi and I know if you have any questions or concerns. If I don't see you this week, I hope everyone has a GREAT break and Merry Christmas!

Weekly Update

Hello Everyone!

Here's a look at our learning this week:

In math, we will focus on solving word problems this week. We will solve 1-step problems using all 4 operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, & division this week. We will assess on Friday. The key to success with word problems is SLOWLY reading each sentence and picturing (or drawing) what's happening. We will also look for clue words in the story that help us determine which operation to use. Here is a sample of some of those words:

We will have math homework each night, but it will not be from our math book.

In reading, we will focus on the cause and effect relationship between sentences and paragraphs. We will look for cause and effect key words as we practice this skill. Here is a sample of cause and effect words:

We will assess our cause and effect skills on Friday along with our weekly spelling list.

In social studies, we will finish our unit on Paul Revere, Frederick Douglass, & Susan B. Anthony. We will complete some review games & activities and then assess our knowledge and understanding of these historical figures. If your child can answer these questions, he or she should do well on the test:
What is Paul Revere best known for?

What did the Patriots believe?

What is a silversmith?

What are colonies?

Which war gave the colonies independence from Great Britain?

What is an abolitionist?

What is the Underground Railroad?

Which president did Frederick Douglass work with?

What did the Emancipation Proclamation do?

What is Susan B. Anthony best known for?

Were women allowed to vote and own property in the early 1800s?

Why was Susan B. Anthony arrested?

What is suffrage?

What is liberty?

What is justice?

In writing and language arts, we will work on prefixes and suffixes. We did not get a chance to start these last week as we were busy presenting our biographies. There is a tab on our class blog with some prefix and suffix games. Feel free to try these out at home.

We will also be reading and writing different gingerbread stories each day this week.

On Friday, we will meet with our first grade buddies.

Don't forget our dress-up days:

As always, please let Mrs. Levi or me know if you need anything.

Thank you!
Have a GREAT week!

Weekly Update

Hello Third Grade Families,
Here's a look at our learning this week:

In math, we are continuing to work on finding the area of rectangles. We will focus on using multiplication to help us find area this week. Remember that the answer to an area problem should have the word "square". For example, 3in.x 4in. = 12 square inches. We will have a math test on Friday focusing on area. Your child will also be answering area word problems such as, "Mrs. Levi planted a garden in her backyard. The length of her garden is 5 ft. The width is 10 feet. What is the total area of her garden?"

In reading, we will focus on the relationship between sentences and paragraphs. We will work on sequencing this week and hunt for sequence transition words that give us clues about the order of events in a story. Here are some sequence clue words and questions you can ask your child to help practice this skill:

Definition: The order of events or steps in a text.

Sequence Clue Words

·      Which of these events happened first/last in the story?
·      What are the steps for making/doing ________? List them in order.
·      Put the following events in the order of how they happened in the story.
·      What do you do before/after _______ step?

·      What did the character do before/after _______ event?

In social studies, we will be learning about a new historical figure...Susan B. Anthony. We will learn about how she worked for women to be given the right to vote.
In writing, we will continue our biographies and hopefully finish this week. Did you ask your child who they picked to write about? When our biographies are complete, each child will do a short presentation to the class about their person. We will prepare for these presentations in class and your child will be expected to speak clearly and at an understandable pace. We will also begin learning more about prefixes this week. We will focus on the prefixes un, dis, mis, pre, & re.

We will have a lesson with our guidance counselor this week, as well as a visit to the science lab!

Our school Holiday Shoppe is this Saturday morning. Come in your pajamas for some holiday fun! Your child will have a chance to do some secret shopping with the budget of your choice. There will be all kinds of fun activities going on. Hope to see you there!

As always, please let Mrs. Levi or me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you!
