Weekly Update

Hello Everyone!

I hope everyone had a good weekend. I enjoyed seeing some of you at the Gator Gallop on Saturday morning!

We have 2 weeks left before Spring Break! Here's what's in store for this week. We will be finishing up our heat and magnets unit in science. And on Friday, we will be visiting the science lab for a tasty heat experiment. (I hear there may be chocolate involved!) In writing, we will be reviewing what we've learned about writing an opinion piece as we practice a sample from the Georgia Milestones study guide. In reading, we will read about Lyndon B. Johnson as we combine our reading and social studies standards. We will also compare and contrast Lyndon B. Johnson with other historical figures. In math, we are starting a new unit in geometry. We will be learning all about quadrilaterals and how to classify shapes according to their attributes.

This Thursday night is International Night at Addison. Come on out!

Most of you have returned the field trip permission form. Please send those in if you haven't. Your child will not be able to go without one. Also, let me know if you plan on meeting us at the museum.

This week's reading homework will be back to the reading log that we had for most of the year. Please make sure your child is writing in complete sentences on his or her log.

Don't forget that we will perform our 3rd grade musical next Thursday night, March 31st (the same day as the field trip). We will do a dress rehearsal for the school Wednesday morning, March 30. Your child will need his or her costume at school that day.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Have a GREAT week!

Weekly Update

Hello Third Grade Families!

We had a GREAT week! The students did such an awesome job with their economics projects. The companies they created were so good! And they did so well using all our economics vocabulary in their presentations to the class. Ask your child about all the different businesses that were created. (Paint-Bot, Swirly Swirls Bakery, Tech Girls, Addie & Sam’s, ZJ Gas Station, SuperJex, Game Fly, JC’s Magic Phones and Tablets, and Buy to Battle) We also had some fun learning about U.S. rivers. Ask your child about the game we played outside on the giant map.

We worked so hard on math word problems and writing out our math thinking in words. This is hard and we will continue practicing next week.

Next week, we will begin a new unit in science as we study heat and magnets. We had a preview of heat in the science lab today with some fun experiments.

During reading, we will be reading non-fiction as we study Thurgood Marshall. He is one of the historical figures 3rd graders learn about as part of our social studies curriculum.

In writing, we will be reviewing what we know about writing an informational piece. We will be using some sample questions from the Georgia Milestones test as we practice this week.

***Don’t Forget***
Our field trip is March 31st. Please return the permission form and money as soon as possible. Thank you to those of you that already have! Let me know if you plan on meeting us there.

This week, our Student Lighthouse Team is collecting nonperishable items for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Please consider supporting this cause!

This Tuesday is Stevi B’s night!

International Night at Addison is next Thursday, the 24th at 6:00pm. Come out and see how many countries are represented at our school. (and enjoy some delicious food!)

Spring Break is April 4-8!!!

The Georgia Milestones Assessment will begin the week after spring break. I’m happy to answer any questions you may have about the test.

As always, please email me with any questions or concerns.

Have a GREAT week!

Hello!

Here is a look at our learning this week:

We will be finishing up our economics unit this week. We will be combining reading, writing and social studies as we become mini-entrepreneurs and create our own businesses. We will decide if we would produce a good or service (or both!), what type of resources we will need for our business, who our ideal consumers are, what our cost should be, if we will import or export anything as part of our business, and more! Ask your child what type of business they are creating.

We will also be learning about 5 major rivers in the United States: Mississippi, Hudson, Colorado, Ohio, & Rio Grande. Find a map and see if your child can identify these rivers.

In math, we will be practicing a variety of skills previously learned. Our main focus this week will be on extended response answers in math. We will work on explaining our answers and the steps we used to solve a math problem. Students will be expected to explain their thinking in complete sentences.

***Reading homework is different this week. There will be NO reading log this week. Instead I will be sending home reading passages with multiple choice and written answers. Remind your child to visualize while they read.

***FIELD TRIP: We will be going on a field trip to the Tellus Museum on March 31st. Please look for the permission form on Tuesday. You are welcome to join us, but you will need to drive yourself and buy a ticket.

***3rd grade Play: All 3rd grade classes are putting on a play called, Squirm. We will be performing for the school the morning of March 30th. Then we will do our big performance on the night of March 31st (the same day as the field trip). You can practice the songs on Mrs. Shook's blog HERE.

As always, please contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. Laura.kloos@cobbk12.org
