A few things:

I have added a link to raz-kids on this blog under the links tab. This is a great reading resource if you are having trouble finding books for your child to read each night for their reading log. There are also comprehension quizzes at the end of the books.

As you know, we are a Leader In Me school. Each month we will learn about one of the 7 leadership habits. This month our focus is Be Proactive. Hopefully, you will notice your child doing something proactive (taking our the trash without being asked, starting homework right away, etc). A yellow sheet was sent home last week for you to fill out if you notice your child being proactive. I've already received a few papers back!

Mrs. Anne Coffer in the front office needs a parent volunteer or two to assist with a small project that encourages leadership among our students. She would need someone maybe once or twice a month to help with putting paper flowers on the wall. She can tell you more about it if this sounds like something you can help with. Her email is

As always, please email me with any questions, comments, or concerns. Thanks!

We finished our rocks and minerals unit on Friday. BIG thanks to Aiden's dad for sharing some of his  family's collection!

This week we will move on to fossils and how they are formed. We will continue reading Charlotte's Web as we practice some important reading skills. In math, we will be learning all about multiplication. Some important math words this week will be array, factor, product, and commutative property of multiplication. Ask your child about these words.

On Friday, we will be visiting the science lab and our 1st grade buddies.

Minerals, Charlotte's Web, Multiplication, Oh My!

We have a lot of exciting things happening this week in 3rd grade. In science, we will be finishing up our unit on rocks and minerals with a research project. Students will be selecting their favorite mineral and doing some research about it in order to write a little persuasive piece. This is a great way to combine science and writing!
We will begin sharing one of my all-time favorite books Charlotte's Web this week. We will be using this book to learn about all kinds of reading skills, but we will focus this week on understanding and comparing character traits.
Before diving into multiplication for the next several weeks, we will spend a couple days reviewing addition and subtraction with regrouping, as this is an important skill that is needed often.

It's going to be a GREAT week!

Science Lab

We had our first visit to the science lab today. We learned about rules and procedures and then did an activity with rocks. Mrs. Knobbe is our awesome science lab teacher! Here are some pictures of our visit to the lab:

Speaking of the Science Lab, did you know that our science lab is supported by the Addison Foundation? Have you donated to our foundation yet??? Please consider donating so that your child can continue to have such great experiences in the lab. Here's a link to find out more about how you can donate. We appreciate anything you can contribute! Thank you! Addison Foundation

1st Grade Buddies

We met with our 1st grade buddies today. It was so fun to see the students interacting with each other! They did a little get to know you activity and then read a book together. This is a great opportunity for the 3rd graders to be leaders for the younger students. We will meet with our buddies every few weeks for some fun, learning adventures. Here are some pictures:

Whew! What a busy week in 3rd grade!

We started off the week with a fun activity in science. Students had to determine if certain foods were rocks or minerals. We were pretending, of course! The big idea was for students to understand that a mineral is a solid object formed in nature that has never been alive and a rock is a solid made of grains of another mineral, or more than one mineral. Here are how some of the sorts turned out:

In math, we learned all about place value and ordering numbers. We played a fun game in pairs today to practice what we learned.

And I can't leave out the recess pictures from earlier in the week!

We had a visit from the purple princess (our school counselor, Teyeka Weston) today. She always brightens up our day! And we completed our SLO (student learning objective) assessment this morning. Remember, it was just a pre-test.

Next week, we will continue learning about rocks and minerals. We have already talked about igneous and sedimentary rocks (ask your child how they're formed). And we will continue with metamorphic rock and move on to the rock cycle. We will finish the week with a visit to our amazing science lab! In writing, we will continue working on opinion writing. We will also practice using plurals correctly. In math, we will use what we know about place value to learn about rounding. Here's a helpful video that we will be singing all week to help us learn the rules of rounding:

We will also be meeting with our 1st grade buddies this week. This will be such a great opportunity for your big 3rd graders to be leaders with the younger students. In the past, they've always been the younger buddy. I know they're looking forward to our meet-up!

I'm looking forward to a great week! Please let me know if you have any questions. I'm just an email away:

Have a great weekend!

Here's our class mission statement that we created together. Our big rules this year are:
Be Respectful
Be Responsible
Be Helpful
Be Safe
The 4 "be's" are school-wide expectations for all of our Addison students. We all signed the bottom of the mission statement.

And here's a fun science experiment that we did together! We did this experiment to practice some important science skills like making a hypothesis, observing, and recording data and results. Here is a video and some pictures from our experiment:

We had another great day in 3rd grade! We started the day by reading, The Day the Crayons Quit. We discussed how it was important to work as a team and then practiced with a fun game! We finished sharing all of the things from our brown bags too. We have a great group of kids!

We had such a GREAT first day in 3rd grade! We sorted all of our supplies and did a lot of labeling. We learned about classroom rules and procedures too. I use classdojo to keep track of behaviors in our room. You will learn more about this at open house next week (Thursday, August 13). The class loved earning points for their behavior today! We also learned so much about each other as we began sharing the items from our brown bags. If you didn't send one in yet, please do so tomorrow so your child can share too. We had our first fire drill and everyone did a great job of getting out of the building quickly and quietly.

Your child should have a red and white folder in their backpacks today. There are several important forms to sign and return. Please send this back as soon as possible. Also, please check your child's gator notebook every night for important papers or notes.

Also, we have P.E. on Tuesdays and Fridays. Please make sure your child has tennis shoes on those days.

I am excited to be with such a FUN group of students this year. We're going to have an awesome year!

See ya tomorrow!
